In Fury Born (2006) by David Weber
This sci-fi novel traces the life of Alicia DeVries through her career as Imperial Marine, then Imperial Cadre (answers directly to the emperor), then retired, then renegade.
After about 600 pages of backstory, DeVries teams up with the Greek Fury Tisiphone and an AI named Megaira to wreak revenge on pirates and traitors.
Calling this a slow-mover does not even begin to adequately describe it.
A lot of emphasis on dialog and character development.
