The Right Minimum Wage

"But the minimum wage should be the same everywhere: $0. Labor is a commodity; governments make messes when they decree commodities' prices. Washington, which has its hands full delivering the mail and defending the shores, should let the market do well what Washington does poorly. But that is a good idea whose time will never come again."

- George Will

I agree with George Will on this one, let the markets decide. We routinely see employers paying more than the minimum wage. And why is that? Because they have to in order to get the employees they want.

The logical progression of the minimum wage madness is of course either a) government takeover of private industry, or b) the use of police and courts (also known as force) to keep private industry from quitting or leaving. a) and b) are versions of the same thing. See Marx/Lenin.

Ultimately, only the poor get totally screwed by minimum wage laws. (the ones who get laid off or never hired)

The rest of the workers only get partly screwed. (the ones that need to do their job plus the work of the guy that got laid off).

As for us rich folks, we will quit, wait for better times or relocate. We don't consider ourselves government employees.

Oh, you don't like that?

Your recourse is a) or b) above.

In the meantime, the national economy goes downhill, while China and other competitors rejoice.

What a great issue to focus on when we have tough world economic competitors, and we have a war to fight to preserve our continued existence.
