Caliban Landing

Isaac Asimov presents Caliban Landing (1987) by Steven Popkes

A science fiction novel of first contact between humans and an alien race on a planet called Caliban (named after Shakespeare's The Tempest).

The story alternates between the viewpoints of the humans and the aliens.

Each of the humans is tragically flawed. The story is a slow mover with frequent flashbacks to show how each member of the crew came to be so tragically flawed.

Borders on the noir, with themes of treason, betrayal, and attempted murder.

In some ways a cautionary tale regarding the perils of miscommunication.

There are so many better novels out there that I am reluctant to recommend it.
